USA may impose sanctions against European companies involved in the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. On Wednesday, January 9, writes the German newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources in the German government.
According to the publication, a new initiative to impose restrictions on developing the U.S. Department of state. While we are talking about two companies: the Swiss Allseas and Italian Saipem. The latter has already finished its work, and the sanctions against it will not have any impact on the progress of construction.
Allseas, on the contrary, is the main contractor for laying of pipes on the seabed, so restrictions against it are fraught with consequences both for the firms and for the overall project, the newspaper said.
The main proponent of imposing new sanctions is the U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenel. He has repeatedly warned of a German company involved in the construction of “Nord stream-2” (Wintershell and Uniper project investor), the danger of the restrictions.
The German government refers to the threats of Washington “with great concern”, noted the authors. The Ministry of foreign Affairs is in constant dialogue with the administration of the President of the United States Donald trump and insists that the pipeline will enhance Europe’s energy security.
According to the plans, “Nord stream-2” should be put into operation in late 2019.
