New manufacturer of electric cars Tesla in Shanghai will be the key to a good relationship between the US and China, said Premier of the state Council of China Li Keqiang, whose words are on the government website.
“We hope that Tesla will become a party to the further promotion of the policy of reform and opening up China, as well as act as a stimulus for stable development of Sino-us relations,” said Keqiang in a meeting with the founder and largest shareholder of Tesla Elon Musk.
The start of construction of the Tesla factory in Shanghai became known in early January. The company will become the first in the industry, which will be wholly owned by foreign investors. Until now, foreign businesses in entering the Chinese market was obliged to form joint ventures with local companies and provide them with access to their technology, which often led to accusations against Beijing’s intellectual property theft. This was one of the reasons for the imposition of duties on Chinese goods to the U.S. and began a trade war between the two countries.
The Chinese state Council also says Keqiang and Musk “held in-depth exchange of views on the development of the automotive industry in new energy sources” discussed cooperation in the sphere of innovations, science and technology. Co-owner of Tesla, in turn, spoke about the “impressive growth rate and work efficiency in China.”
In 2018, the scandal with the purchase of shares, Tesla Musk has lost the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company and retained only the post of Director General. In his possession remained 19.7 percent of the company shares, making it the largest owner.
