The Parliament of Macedonia voted to change the name of the Republic. On Friday, January 11, reports TASS.
The initiative was supported by 81 of the 120 deputies. Now the country will carry the name Republic of North Macedonia.
In addition, this bill provides for amendments to the Constitution. The amendments contain a provision on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring countries, as well as the intention to defend the rights of Macedonians abroad without interference in the sovereign rights of other States.
The decision to change the name of the Republic was adopted in June 2018 Greek and Macedonian Prime Ministers Alexis Tsipras and Zoran by Sevim. After approval of the agreement in the Parliament of Macedonia is similar to the election would be held in Greece.
The dispute about the name started after Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Athens did not accept it, because Greece has a province with the same name and the new country could apply to it. The renaming will allow Macedonia to join NATO and the EU, as it will solve years of conflict between the two countries.
