The Russians refused to return medals in the Olympics for fear of losing benefits

The lawyer of the former bobsledder Alexander Zubkov Artem Patsev told why his client the status of Olympic champion. His words leads to “Sport-Express”.

Patsev said that the decision of the court of arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the deprivation Zubkov status of the Olympic champion did not apply in Russia. “What is Zubkov? The fact is that in our legislation there are benefits that come into force, if the person is a winner or medalist of the Olympic games. In order to act, Zubkov and should be considered as not committed anti-doping violations during the Olympic games in Sochi,” — said the lawyer.

In November 2018 the international Olympic Committee (IOC) demanded the return of two gold medals of the Olympics-2014, which Zubkov won in competitions twos and fours. Despite the IOC decision, the court retained the right sportsman for gold, which caused a reaction from the international organizations. The IOC has demanded from the Russian side to ensure the implementation of the CAS decision. Otherwise in respect of the Russian Olympic Committee may be followed by sanctions.

Zubkov was convicted of violating anti-doping rules in November 2017. The former sportsman stripped of the medals of the 2014 Games. Later, the IOC reduced the sentence by replacing the lifetime ban to a suspension from the Olympics in Pyeongchang.
