The presumable reason of failure of the command transmitter, the only Russian space radio telescope “Spektr-R” could be accumulated over eight years of flight radiation. It is reported TASS citing a source in the space industry.
“As the inoperability of the receiving / transmitting device “the Spectrum-R” experts suggest the influence of the radiation dose accumulated over the period of the flight in the electronic components of the satellite”, — said the Agency interlocutor. According to him, the failure of the transmitter for receiving control commands from Earth, the third, the primary and the second backup has failed previously.
The source did not exclude that the command line radio communication with the radio telescope will be able to restore. He noted that this uses a “soft” method: restart the software every 8 hours.
January 13 the representative of Roscosmos said that the experts were not able to regain control of the telescope on the device “Spektr-R”. It was noted that it exceeded the period of his active work in 2.5 times.
12 January it became known that a radio telescope on the device “Spektr-R”, part of the Radioastron project, stopped working on the reception of the command data, but it continues to send information to Earth. It was explained that the cause of the loss of control could the failure of the third backup set of the receiving / transmitting device.
A radio telescope with a receiving parabolic antenna with a diameter of 10 meters was put into orbit in the composition of the spacecraft “Spektr-R” in 2011.
