The Greeks are against the agreement with Macedonia to change its name because they believe the contract is not sufficiently severe. They require a radical change names and want the neighboring country is completely abandoned the use of the word “Macedonia”. The protesters believe that Macedonia can be called only in the Greek, as the word is an integral part of the historical heritage of the country.
The Greek Parliament must approve the agreement this week. January 11, a similar motion was passed in the Parliament of Macedonia, the initiative was supported by 81 of the 120 deputies.
If Greek lawmakers will support the deal, Macedonia will be called Republic of North Macedonia. The decision to change the name of the Republic was adopted in June 2018 Greek and Macedonian Prime Ministers Alexis Tsipras and Zoran by Sevim. This political agreement put forward for the Nobel peace prize 2019.
The dispute about the name started after Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Athens did not accept it, because Greece has a province with the same name and the new country could apply to it. The renaming will allow Macedonia to join NATO and the EU, as it will solve years of conflict between the two countries.
