Former head coach of the Russian biathlon Wolfgang Pichler, who now heads the team of Sweden, responded to the accusations of the former head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory of Gregory Rodchenkov in doping fraud. Words of Pichler leads “CHempionata”.
“Unfortunately, I can’t go to Pyeongchang because it does not allow the IOC, but I will control the situation in the team. My lawyer says that the chances to challenge this decision in court no. What’s the problem? Rodchenkov says Zaitseva four years, sat on EPO, and I as an experienced trainer should know that. But I wasn’t involved in this, and as an experienced coach, I couldn’t see and don’t believe it. I want to know how I was implicated in this doping scandal,” said Pichler.
The German asked to present evidence of his guilt. “My athletes didn’t hand in any positive samples. All Russian athletes were on the WADA monitoring during training in Europe, and it would be impossible. There was no doubt. But I was not even given a chance with eye to eye to prove his innocence,” added the coach.
Pichler worked in the women’s team biathlon from 2011 to 2014.
21 December 2017, the coach received a waiver from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in obtaining accreditation for the winter Games 2018 in Pyeongchang, as his former wards of Olga Zaitseva, Olga viluhina and Yana Romanova was found guilty of doping and barred for life from participation in Competitions. Their results at the Games in Sochi was cancelled.
Rodchenkov was head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory from 2005 to 2015 and moved to the United States in January 2016, and then became a whistleblower the world anti-doping Agency (WADA). He accused the Russian winners and medalists of the Olympics-2014 in the use of illegal drugs.
