The government of Latvia approved the transfer of schools of national minorities, including Russian-speaking, teaching entirely in Latvian language. It is reported by TASS on Tuesday, January 23.
The relevant amendments to the law developed the education Ministry. To the amendments entered into force, the bill must be approved by the Saeima (the Parliament). Previously, reform is already supported by the Ruling coalition of Latvia. It is assumed that the reform should be implemented gradually from September 1, 2019 and be completed in 2021-2022 school year.
It clarifies the portal Delfi, preschool learning and teaching in the primary grades (1-6) will remain bilingual, the final stage of basic education (7-9 classes), 80 percent of subjects are taught in Latvian in secondary school (grades 10-12) — all.
In may 2017, the Saeima adopted in the first reading and referred to the Commission bill, which envisages increase of fines violation of the law on the state (Latvian) language to 10 thousand euros in individual cases, including unjustified use of other languages. The authors of the amendments said that the fines will contribute to the growth of the economy.
