In North China, 85 people were convicted for a fraudulent scheme to “cure” baldness. This reports the South China Morning Post.
According to the publication, the court held in the city district of Ordos in the Autonomous region of Inner Mongolia. The criminal group was founded by three people, at its peak it numbered over 100 members who were responsible for logistics, marketing, advertising, and Finance.
The founders have trained workers to pretend to be medical consultants or doctors. Then those on the phone tried to persuade people to buy a special tonic made of snake oil. It was intended for people whose hair is falling out. Also the “medicine” sold to those who were supposedly symptoms of a “weak kidney”: they are convinced that it is used in traditional medicine to improve their function.
The scheme opened at the end of 2016, when one of the residents of the region said about the fraud to the police. According to prosecutors, in just five months, the group played 8945. They gave to swindlers of approximately 10.5 million yuan (about $ 1.7 million).
In the end, three chapters of the criminal organization received from 11 to 13 years of imprisonment. Their employees went to prison terms ranging from one to six years.
