President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach explained why a reasonable court of arbitration for Sports (CAS), the Russian athletes have not received invitations to the Games in Pyeongchang. His words are quoted RT.
“We could not allow a “pure” Russian athletes to participate in Olympic games and has developed a special program of individual selection. Each of the Russian athletes passed a thorough inspection before you get an invitation. CAS took a disappointing decision, but one of the lack of sanctions is not enough for an invitation to the Olympics,” said Bach.
The functionary added that the admission of “clean” athletes at the Olympics in 2018 serves to protect the interests of athletes from other countries.
Earlier, on February 5 Bach revealed the details of the work of the Commission dealing with the question of admission of Russian athletes at the Olympic games in 2018. According to him, the cases were studied anonymously, the Committee members did not know whose case is considered.
Olympics 2018 will be held from 9 to 25 February. In South Korea, the Russian athletes will compete under the Olympic flag and the special status of “Olympic athlete from Russia.”
