The body of the pilot of Roman Filipov, who was killed in the Syrian province of Idlib were returned to Russia by common efforts of Moscow and Ankara. This was announced by the defense Ministry, reports TASS.
Specifies that the operation involved Russian military intelligence officers and their Turkish counterparts.
According to sources, the major’s body was brought to Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow on 5 February. Along with it was taken part of the wreckage of a downed su-25, which was operated by the pilot.
Decree of the President Filipovo awarded the title of Hero of Russia posthumously. The officer will be buried 8 February in Voronezh, with military honors.
Filipov was killed February 3 in Idlib after his su-25 was shot down by rebels using a portable anti-aircraft missile system. The pilot ejected and landed, and then took the fight. For some time he was fired from staff weapons, and eventually blew himself up with a grenade to avoid capture.
