Indian scientists have found that specific proteins in the mitochondria, called sirtuins (SIR), help slow aging. Preprint of a study published in the repository bioRxiv.org.
Sirtuins as well are enzymes that catalyze the removal of acetylase different proteins. The researchers found that some of the sirtuins, contained in the nucleus, may regulate lifespan in insects depending on food intake.
In the mitochondria, which are responsible for the generation of the necessary for the energy cells, sirtuins as well are also present, but their influence on the aging process still remained unknown. At the same time, the correlation between aging and improper functioning of mitochondria.
In the study as a model organism has been used fly Drosophila melanogaster. Scientists suppressed the activity of mitochondrial sirtuin SIRT4, leading to reduced life expectancy in insects. It is known that the lifespan of Drosophila also affects the ratio of sugar and yeast in the diet, but any diet insects did not live long. This is due to the acceleration of the aging process.
In the future, scientists plan to find out what molecular and genetic mechanisms define the influence of sirtuins on lifespan. This will help to develop new methods for anti-aging therapy.
