Experts found out which words are most frequently used by people suffering from depression. The results of the study, told the newspaper the Independent.
In the experiment with big data technologies were analysed thousands of posts on forums, social media posts, and online journals belonging to users with diagnosed depression. Was evaluated as the most frequent words and lexical variety, sentence length, grammatical structures and other parameters.
It turned out that depressed patients prefer adjectives and adverbs associated with negative emotions, such as “lonely”, “sad” and “pathetic”. Most often, they use the pronouns “I” and”me” and rarely the pronoun of the second and third person. According to the researchers, it is a sure sign of depression, as patients are pulled to their own experiences and lose touch with the world.
The researchers also met in the studied material the abundance of categorical judgments like “always”, “nothing” and “absolutely”. Scientists explain this by the fact that patients with depression and anxiety disorder, people see the world without halftones. Most of these words are used a potential suicide bomber.
Scientists hope that the results of the study can be used to train computers to identify depressed people and to classify them according to the problem, be it low self esteem, excessive perfectionism or increased anxiety. So they plan to find and prevent potential suicides.
According to who estimates, depression affects about 300 million people around the world.
