The President of France Emmanuel macron is going to arrive at an international economic forum in St. Petersburg (SPIEF) this year. About it reports “Kommersant” with reference to diplomatic sources in Paris.
The invitation to the forum gave Him personally the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in may 2017 in the negotiations at Versailles. Also in Paris considered the possibility of a visit to Russia in December 2017 or January 2018, but this version refused to trip of the French leader did not coincide with holidays.
It is noted that the decision to visit the Macron at the SPIEF has actually been made, however, until it decided not to declare publicly. “Presidential elections in Russia will be held in March, and although we anticipate the outcome would not be entirely right to accept now the invitation is not re-elected Vladimir Putin”, — said the interlocutor of “Kommersant”.
Moscow hopes that the meeting in St. Petersburg will help first to resolve the issues in Ukraine, particularly Russia’s initiative about deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in the Donbass. Also, as suggested in a diplomatic environment, the French President’s visit will help to move relations between Russia and the West in the direction of normalization.
At the end of the first half of 2018, the European Union intends to discuss the extension of economic sanctions against Russia. The basis for their introduction was the secession of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 after the referendum in which over 90 percent of voters supported its reunification with Russia. Ukraine and most Western Nations do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia and consider the results of the referendum illegal.
SPIEF will be held this year from 24 to 26 may.
