Russian schoolchildren have discovered a new island in the Arctic

Russian students Artem Makarenko and Valeriy Saenko have discovered a new island formed due to the melting of the glacier near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, according to the official website of Roscosmos.

Teenagers found the object near the glacier Vilkitsky-South January 31 at the all-Russia youth readings named Queen in Samara. It is noted that the discovery was made in the study of images produced with domestic spacecraft remote sensing (RS) “kanopus-V” and the European Landsat-7/8 and Sentinel-1/2.

Documents on registration of new geographical object sent to the Russian geographical society.

Indicates that students have carried out research in the framework of interregional youth project group working under the management of the company “Rissat” with the support of the Corporation Roscosmos.

Earlier it became known that the scientists of the Institute of solar-terrestrial physics, Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the framework will create a network of radars to study the ionosphere (layer of atmosphere) over the Arctic. With the help of installations for scholars to obtain new information about the processes on the Sun in space and the Earth’s atmosphere.
