The Syrian opposition is no longer able to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. This is stated in the report of the Director of national intelligence Daniel Coates presented to the special Committee on intelligence of the Senate of the United States.
“The conflict has strongly changed in favor of the Syrian regime, allowing Russia and Iran to gain a foothold in the country. Probably the opposition forces after seven years of armed insurrection is no longer able to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad or the military to eliminate the backlog,” notes the report.
Also, intelligence came to the conclusion that the rebels probably saved resources to maintain the conflict at least for the next year.
11 Dec 2017 sources of the newspaper The New Yorker said that the administration of U.S. President Donald trump agreed with the finding of Bashar al-Assad in power until 2021. The official position of Washington was influenced by successes of Syrian government forces with the support of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah.
