The blame for the armed conflict in the Donbass is the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. With such statement in a course a press-conferences in Moscow were made by former leader Viktor Yanukovych, reports TASS.
“In four years, none of the Ukrainian authorities have not made attempts to start direct negotiations came with the territory [of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics], nor with the people who live there. The blame for this lies on Poroshenko. He promised to end the war in a matter of days, but it did nothing for this”, — said Yanukovych.
Also, the former President of Ukraine called the method by which, in his opinion, it is possible to end the war in the Donbass. “I am confident that the only way for peace is through peaceful direct negotiations with Donbass representatives with the assistance and under the supervision of the EU, Russia, US and UN. For my part, I expect soon to apply to the States-guarantors of the signing of the agreement of 21 February 2014 and States that play a key role in resolving the conflict in the Donbas, the U.S. and Russia. The subject of my address will be proposals to seek ways of ending the war in the Donbass and the beginning of liquidation of consequences of incident”, — he said.
In mid-January of 2017, the lawyer Yanukovych Vitaliy Serdyuk said that the former President wants to return to the country. According to the lawyer, the presence of Yanukovych in Russia is a forced measure, since at home he is being persecuted for political reasons. Serdyuk said that Moscow has provided his client a temporary shelter.
Yanukovych was President of Ukraine from 2010 to 2014. After a violent regime change in the Euromaidan mass protests in Kyiv and other cities, he left the country. In Ukraine against the former head of state initiated several criminal cases, his property on the territory of the country were arrested.
The confrontation between Ukrainian security forces and militias self-proclaimed republics of Donbass lasts from spring 2014. Then the Kiev leadership that came to power in a coup, announced the beginning of anti-terrorist operation to suppress protests of the inhabitants of the East of the country. Western countries and Ukraine Russia are regularly referred to one of the parties to the conflict, Moscow in turn consistently denies these allegations.
