Russia and China “want to split the West.” This was stated by the assistant Secretary on Affairs of Europe and Eurasia Uess Mitchell, RIA Novosti reported.
“Russia seeks to crush it, and China — to take his place. They are particularly aggressive in Central and Eastern Europe”, — the diplomat said at a hearing in the Senate.
Mitchell said that in recent years Moscow “tried to change the border, threatened the neighbors and attacked them, initiated a campaign of disinformation and cyber attacks against the West, reinforced the military presence on the Western borders”. According to him, in such a situation the main task of Washington should be “opposition to Russian aggression.”
At the same time, the state Department spokesman indicated that the United States wants closer relations with Moscow, but not ready to compromise their principles or allies.
In April, a former aide to President Ronald Reagan Doug Bando said that the West must avoid a new cold war with Russia, as it does not threaten anyone and is not a threat.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald trump called Russia and China are rivals who challenge the interests of the economy and values of the country. In late January, Pentagon chief James Mattis said that Washington intends to spend billions of dollars on preparations for war in space with Russia and China.
