Scientists at Princeton University (USA) found that modern pygmies living on the island of Flores, are not descendants of Florensky people (Homo floresiensis), who, because of his small stature known as “hobbits”. Previously, a number of researchers have suggested that the local aboriginal people have inherited genes from the dwarf archaic people. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.
The remains of Homo floresiensis were first discovered in 2003 in Indonesia on the island of Flores. Their age reached 13-95 thousands of years. Growth Florensky was about one meter, and the volume of their brains was three times less than the volume of the brain of modern man. It is assumed that they appeared about 1.75 million years ago.
The relationship between modern pygmies and Florensky people difficult to install, since scientists are unable to isolate the DNA from the remains of H. floresiensis and to reconstruct their genome. Therefore, the researchers analyzed 32 genome pygmies living in the vicinity of Liang Bua, to determine what his share is inherited from Neanderthals, denisovans, and unknown sources, one of which could be “hobbits”.
Scientists discovered that the genome of the natives has a large number of the DNA of Homo neanderthalensis, also a small part inherited from the Denisovsky person. However, they did not find genes of unknown origin.
The researchers also identified genetic variants associated with low growth. Scientists believe that such changes in DNA were characteristic of the “hobbits”, since the conditions of the environment on Flores, including predators and limited resources contributed to the survival of individuals with these mutations. Thus, dwarfism occurred on the island a few times.
