The estimated losses of the West from the Russian sanctions

The Russian food embargo is a response to imposed by Western countries sanctions. Restrictive measures from the EU, USA and some other countries adopted for the first time in 2014, and are associated with the annexation of Crimea. The Peninsula became part of Russia following the results of referendum in which an overwhelming majority of residents voted in support of this decision. Kiev, and with it the Western countries did not recognize the results of the plebiscite. Moscow insists that the accession process conforms to the norms of international law.
