NATO approved the decision to build the first base in the Balkans, in Central Albania. About this Facebook said the Prime Minister EDI Rama.

For the construction was chosen as the old military airfield in the city of Sochi, which from 1950 to 1990 bore the name of Stalin. According to the head of the government, investments of NATO in the first phase of the modernization project will amount to more than 50 million euros.

“Sochi will be used for NATO supply, logistics support, support aviamodelling police, training of personnel and exercise of the Alliance,” wrote the Prime Minister of Albania. He noted that the air base will also be the basis for the national air force.

Rama added that attachment to NATO “will create new opportunities for economic and social development of the region.” The project will start within this year.

In August 2016, it was reported on the reorientation of Soviet military base in Albania into a tourist attraction. We are talking about a database that is located on the Sazani island in the Adriatic sea, which in the 1950s were at the disposal of the Soviet troops.

Albania became a member of NATO in April 2009. The decision was taken at the NATO summit in Bucharest.
