Former President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili expressed his opinion about relations of Moscow and Tbilisi after the events of 2008. Russia, in his view, did not win the war, but only suffered reputation damage and loss of life. He told about it in interview to “Novaya Gazeta”.
On a question of journalist that won the conflict, Saakashvili said. “It’s still a developing situation,” he explained. Former Georgian leader added that Russia in 2008 failed to achieve the change of its government and course, but partially achieved this in 2012.
“With the help of Russian oligarch Ivanishvili (following Saakashvili the President of Georgia — approx. “Of the tape.ru”), the largest private shareholder of “Gazprom”, it [Moscow] was able to change the agenda in Tbilisi. It was the first victory for Putin in the war”, — he stressed.
August 6, Saakashvili accused Russia in the invasion in 2008. According to him, the regular Russian troops were in South Ossetia before the conflict.
Mikheil Saakashvili was President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013. In 2008, at the beginning of his second presidential term, Georgia sent troops into the breakaway South Ossetia, trying to take the region under its control. After the intervention of Russia, the Georgian military were forced out of the conflict zone. Later, Moscow officially recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
