The number of victims of a bridge collapse Morandi in Genoa has reached 31 people. This was announced by the Ministry of internal Affairs of Italy, reports the Corriere della Sera.
Among the dead are children — eight-year-old boy and two teenagers of 12 and 13 years old. The bodies of five people have not yet been identified.
Deputy Minister of transport and infrastructure of Italy, Edoardo Crowns said that the bridge will be completely dismantled, despite the serious consequences for traffic and problems for residents and companies.
Road bridge in Genoa collapsed on 14 August. Length of the collapsed part of the bridge exceeds about 200 meters. The result of 30-35 cars and a few trucks were under the rubble.
What was the cause of the collapse is still unknown. According to one version, the incident occurred due to heavy rain. In addition, in recent years, experts have discussed the stability of engineering structures and actively called for extensive renovation. According to experts, it was necessary for a realistic assessment of the overall condition of the bridge: after many years a point of maintenance this information was outdated.
Bridge, also known as the Viaduct Polcevera, was located over the industrial area, the railroad tracks and the river. Its total length is 1102 meters, the road passed at an elevation of 45 meters from the ground. The structure was built in the 1960-ies. According to press reports, the reconstruction of the bridge was carried out two years ago, in 2016.
