The ROC began work on a reconstruction project of Sergiev Posad (Moscow oblast). The radio station “Moscow speaking” said a member of the Patriarchal Council for culture Archpriest Leonid Kalinin.
According to him, the plan of construction works involves the construction of a complex of the Synodal institutions in the place of the Soviet city administration building and demolition of several other buildings.
“Sergiev Posad is a unique city that grew around the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. In the minds of our people is the largest spiritual center in Russia. But those Soviet buildings that were there, disfigured city. (…) The city should be cleaned from the Soviet legacy, it is necessary that the authenticity be restored,” he said.
Kalinin stressed that this project is “an attempt of purification of our historical heritage from foreign influence, from the mediocre works that emerged in the Soviet period”, and the authorities of Sergiyev Posad “informed about it”. Archpriest noted that the project, which involved the Advisory Council on Church art, architecture and restoration, blessed by Patriarch Kirill and presented to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
“When you look at ugly things, it puts an imprint on your soul. Therefore, we must try to do everything so that we could create a worthy of this Holy place urban environment, which would have revealed the main Shrine — the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra”, he concluded and added that other cities of Russia, in particular Vladimir, you also need to get rid of Soviet architecture.
It is expected that construction work will take several years. The project cost is not disclosed.
