The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko apologized to the citizens for his own promise to end the armed conflict in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts for a few hours. On Thursday, August 23, according to “Gordon”.
“More than four years ago, I said that the anti-terrorist operation will last hours, not months. And now it does not matter in what context those words were said, not important, and the imagery of this statement. People took it as an opportunity to end the war very, very quickly. And I wish I had created high expectations, and sincerely apologize, that gave hope that did not happen,” — said the Ukrainian leader.
“It is regrettable that gave the promise is not fulfilled. And I apologize for that. This for me is a very serious lesson of careful and responsible attitude to their words and promises. The country needs an honest conversation, and I made conclusions. And from the beginning it was necessary to focus on the long struggle to free up every scrap of Ukrainian land,” he added.
Poroshenko stated that Kiev events in Donbass were seen as a “rebellion of the separatists.” “Yes, artificial, organized by Moscow, it funded and armed from “rosvertola”, but still rebellion. And only with time it became clear that this is not a rebellion, but a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. We gathered in a fist all the resources available within weeks, freed from the militants a huge part of the Donbass, dozens of cities, villages and towns. This is because the ATO really close then winning the final,” said the President of Ukraine.
“But Russia in August invaded the territory of Ukraine for regular units. And it radically changed the military-strategic position. And all of our estimates on the resources, time, intensity of the operation were destroyed”, — said Poroshenko.
The armed conflict in the Donbas began in the spring of 2014 after Kiev attempted to suppress statements in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions caused by the change of power in Ukraine. Kiev regularly accuses of meddling in the conflict Russia. In the Kremlin deny the existence in the East of Ukraine the regular units of the Russian Armed forces.
Petro Poroshenko was elected Ukrainian President on may 25, 2014. The next day he stated that the antiterrorist operation in Donbass “cannot and should not continue for months, she should be out for hours.”
