The main reason that fourth-generation fighters, especially the American F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon and the Soviet su-27 and MiG-29 will not lose its relevance, is that these planes are actually multipurpose, writes The National Interest.
American journal admits that these and similar fighters can last until 2050-ies, despite the emergence of fifth-generation aircraft. The publication notes that the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, su-27 and MiG-29 in comparison with other aircraft of the fourth generation, is distinguished by the possibility of gradual modernization.
In addition, in The National Interest recognize that the fourth-generation fighter, which was originally designed without the use of stealth technology, still has not lost its relevance in terms of air combat. On the other hand, writes the edition, the earliest aircraft of the fourth generation, adopting countries in the early 1970-ies, probably complete its service.
In August 2018, TNI suggested that Russia is likely to create a fighter-interceptor of the fifth generation MiG-41, which is probably not going to be using stealth technology.
