Scientists at the southwest University of the Trinity in Albuquerque (USA) came to the conclusion that the fallen about four thousand years ago a meteor destroyed the human settlements North of the Dead sea. This publication reports Science News.
Archaeologists carried out excavation of five ancient large settlements in Jordan. The researchers found that people were living there for 2,500 years until the end of the bronze age, after which the village was abandoned for 600-700 years. Was also discovered 120 small sites, which experienced the influence of strong heat and wind.
According to experts, at the time of the meteorite fall in the region lived 40-65 thousand people. The results of the radiocarbon Dating showed that about 3,700 years ago, the houses built of mud bricks, suddenly disappeared, leaving only stone foundations. In addition, the outer layer of many clay objects were fused with the formation of pieces of glass which contains crystals of zircon. This indicates the influence of very high temperature comparable to the surface temperature of the Sun.
According to the biblical story, in the area of the Dead sea were the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which were destroyed in the old Testament God for the sins of their inhabitants. Some scientists believe that the city was razed to the ground in the fall of the asteroid.
