In Yakutia sentenced the former Director of the Orthodox gymnasium of hieromonk Melety (Andrey Tkachenko) to 17 years in strict regime colony for pedophilia. On Wednesday, November 28, reported portal SakhaDay.

According to the court, Tkachenko was found guilty in 46 episodes of sexual abuse of children under the age of 14. At the stage of investigation, he was charged with 87 counts of violence, but half of them failed to prove. Father Meletios was ordered to pay 400 thousand rubles for moral damages of the victims and to undergo psychiatric treatment. The hearing was held behind closed doors due to the nature of the crimes of the former headmaster.

The publication notes that the rumors about the sexual abuse of minors appeared in the media back in 2011, but this information was left without attention. Tkachenko was arrested in June 2017 for two episodes of violence against children. A month after the detention the press service of the Yakut Diocesan administration announced a ban of the “hieromonk Meletius the service”. After the appeal raised the issue of depriving him of his dignity.

Earlier in November, it was reported that a priest from the Krasnodar region was removed from service and sent to serve his sentence in a monastery because of accusations of assaulting a 20-year-old altar boy. The rector of the Church forbade him to be a priest and blessing in the next seven years.
