Russia must pay to the Council of Europe about 60 million euros. This was stated press Secretary of the CE Secretary General Daniel of Holtgen, reports RIA Novosti.
It is noted that earlier about the same amount said the Minister of foreign Affairs of Finland Timo Soini. According to him, the Helsinki hope to find a compromise on the return of Russia to the work of the Council and on payment of the debt of Moscow.
In April 2014 the Russian delegation was deprived of powers due to the events in the Donbas and the Crimea. Russia was deprived of voting rights and participation in decision-making bodies of the Assembly and its monitoring missions.
On June 30, Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov informed the COE Secretary General thorbjørn Jagland about the freezing of the contribution to the budget of the CE in 2017 to restore the full authority of the delegation of the Federal Assembly of Russia in PACE. It was emphasized that Russia will continue to fulfill their commitments made earlier at the Council of Europe conventions.
The Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said that Moscow’s decision to suspend the payment of a contribution to the Council of Europe indicates that the situation in the parliamentary Assembly of the COE.
