The United States put pressure on the German authorities to stop the project “Northern stream-2”. On Sunday, January 27, writes Handesblatt.
In recent months, the US attack on the project complicate the German-American relationship, Washington is now adding to the pressure. “Now is the time to act,” said a senior official of the White house. According to him, the EU should take measures, before Russia will have a huge impact due to gas pipeline. “We want to ensure that the project was stopped”, — said the interlocutor Handesblatt.
The U.S. government is warning Europe about the threat of falling into dependence on Russian gas supplies. “Once the pipeline is built, Europe will lose an important room for maneuver in relations with Russia”, — assured in Washington.
The US demand that the Europeans have maintained a continuous transit through Ukraine, but also support the proposal of the leader of the German party CDU Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to reduce the amount of future supply in the “Nord stream-2”. However, the White house recognizes that these measures are not very effective: after the project launch, it will be difficult to get Russia to report on the amount.
Handesblatt recalls that in early January, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grennel has threatened sanctions to European companies involved in the construction of the pipeline. The diplomat also sent them a special letter. The interlocutor of the edition noted that the document was not supposed to go to journalists.
According to recent polls, most people in Germany (73 percent) support “Nord stream-2”. Gas pipeline to connect Russia and Germany under the Baltic sea. Its capacity is estimated at 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The launch is scheduled for late 2019.
