The majority of Russians (77 percent) oppose the transfer to Japan of the Kuril Islands. This is evidenced by opinion polls, cited by RIA Novosti.
The study says that the demand Japan to return the southern Kuril Islands know 79 percent of Russians. 29 percent of the citizens claim that the issue is resolved, as these Islands belong to Russia. 10 percent of respondents believe that the Russian side won the disputed territory.
14 percent of respondents advocated the transfer of Islands of Japan. 7 per cent explained the need to conclude a peace Treaty and to develop relations between the two countries.
Earlier on January 27 the press-Secretary of Russian leader Dmitry Peskov said that the talks with Japan on a peace agreement is complicated by the fact that Tokyo supports the Western sanctions against Moscow. He also noted that Moscow will not be a second time to step on a rake and to believe verbal assurances on such vital substances as security.
On January 22 in Moscow hosted talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. In Tokio announced that the parties are studying the possibility to include a paragraph on security assurances.
