Belarus took introduced a decade ago, restrictions on the number of American diplomats who can work in the country. On Thursday, 31 January, said the Deputy head of the foreign Ministry Oleg Kravchenko in a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington, reports RIA Novosti.
“The restriction has been lifted, it’s true,” confirmed a representative of the Belarusian depodesta. At the same time, he said that decisions on the return of the recalled ambassadors of Belarus and the United States was taken.
“When the decision [about returning diplomats] will be made, it will still take months, if not years”, — said Kravchenko, adding that most likely, it will take it years.
14 January it became known that Belarus and the USA discussed the possibility of expanding the diplomatic presence, including the return of ambassadors. “We are negotiating how to develop our cooperation, on the understanding that both parties should be represented at the ambassadorial level,” — said the Minister of foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Makei.
In January, the American magazine Foreign Policy reported, citing a source in the state Department that the Belarusian authorities lifted restrictions on the number of working American diplomats in the country. According to the edition, such decision was made during a telephone conversation between Mackay and assistant Secretary of state for European and Eurasian Wesson Mitchell. The interlocutor of the edition called the move “the beginning of the thaw” in relations between the two countries.
After that, the press Secretary of the Belarusian foreign Ministry Anatoly Glaz said that between the leadership of the foreign Ministry of Belarus and the US state Department recently held several telephone conversations, but did not disclose details of the negotiations.
In 2008, diplomatic staff from the U.S. Embassy in Minsk was reduced from 35 to 5 people. Minsk recalled its Ambassador from Washington, and recommended the us Ambassador to leave the country. Representatives of the two countries led by temporary attorneys. Thus, the Belarusian authorities responded to the sanctions that the US imposed against them for violation of human rights.
