Sakhalin island residents opposed the transfer of the Kuril Islands of Japan

The vast majority of inhabitants of Sakhalin considers the Kuril Islands as Russian territory and opposed their transfer to Japan. About this TASS said the acting Governor of the region Valery Limarenko.

“The fate of the Kuril Islands for the residents of Sakhalin solved explicitly: this is our Russian land. Overseas, in Japan, people could talk as much as you want. We know that such an agenda exists, but it is intended for Japanese audience, not for those people who live on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. In our region the absolute majority does not consider that this issue is really on the agenda,” said the official.

According to him, the region has other topics to discuss with the Japanese, including in the field of “cooperation for mutual benefit”.

28 Jan all-Russia centre of studying of public opinion (VTSIOM) has published results of a survey about the attitude of Russians to the topic of transfer of Japan of the southern Kuril Islands for the conclusion of the Tokyo peace Treaty and the development of bilateral relations. Three quarters of respondents (77 per cent) opposed such a step, 14 percent.

On January 22 in Moscow hosted a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. In the framework of talks on concluding a peace Treaty following the Second world war, a stumbling block which are smoked. The Kremlin said the invariance of the positions of the parties. The Japanese side insists that the Islands belong to her, and demands to return them.
