Kosovo ready to give part of its territory of Serbia as a fee for a final agreement between Pristina and Belgrade. This was stated by the head of the breakaway Republic, Hashim Thaci, during a debate at the Council on foreign relations in Washington, reports Gazeta Express.
“If a small correction of the border is the price of a final peace agreement, then this should be acceptable,” explained Thaci.
At the same time, he pointed out that a number of territories and objects are strategically important, and therefore not transferable. Among them, he called reservoir Gazivode, city of Kosovska Mitrovica and the nearby industrial complex “Trepca”.
“There is no easy process of reaching agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, but this is the only way to avoid the resurgence of tension and conflict,” stressed Thaci. He added that the regional authorities will not accept an agreement which would be unacceptable to the US, because American support is vital. According to him, the main objective of Kosovo is the recognition by Serbia and the UN membership.
At the end of December Thaci signed the law on establishment of the state of the army in five thousand people. For this decision voted by the Parliament. Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic stated that it could trigger a military intervention by Belgrade. NATO condemn the actions of the Kosovo authorities.
In 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, but Belgrade refused to admit it. Negotiations between the parties ceased in March 2017.
