At the annual Convention in Japan, dedicated to the “Day of Northern territories” — as the Japanese call the Islands of Kunashir, Iturup, Shikotan and Habomai — were not, as previously, to use the term “illegal occupation.” This was reported by the Agency Kyodo.
At the conference organized by government and civil society organizations, discussed “the return of the Northern territories.” The discussion was attended by the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. He said that he was going to accelerate negotiations and to come to peace with Russia.
Although the words about “illegal occupation” no longer sounded, the politician stressed that the Islands of Japan, and through negotiation it will seek to return them.
On 5 February the Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that the negotiations on the peace Treaty a first step for Tokyo, which should recognize Russian sovereignty over the Southern Kuril Islands and results of the Second world war.
On January 22 in Moscow hosted talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.
The peace Treaty between Russia and Japan have not signed in for over 70 years. The conclusion of the Tokyo refers to the return control of the Islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai: the Japanese side does not recognize Russian sovereignty over the territory of the South Kuril Islands, considering them part of Hokkaido. Moscow considers them part of the Kuril Islands and consistently recalls the legality of the Russian sovereignty over them: they withdrew from the Soviet Union following the Second world war.
