In the Republic of South Africa (South Africa) the dog took the brunt of the knife, protecting the owner against the offender. According to Daily Mail, the animal managed to survive.
The incident occurred on the outskirts of the capital, Cape town. 40-year-old unemployed vensel Gino (Gino Wensel) was running with his German shepherd named Duke, when he noticed that he is approached by a man with a knife in his hand. The dog growled at the aggressor, and he pounced on the animal and stabbed it in the head with a kitchen knife. That didn’t stop the Duke, shepherd chased the attacker and only after that he lost consciousness and fell in a puddle of his own blood.
Vensel at first thought his pet was dead, but then noticed a faint breath. The man called a friend, and he took them to the office of the animal protection organization Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA). Vets immediately made Duke an injection of anesthetic and plunged him into a state of anesthesia to do x-rays. The showed that the blade entered the skull at 7.5 cm, but is bent on the bone and did not penetrate the brain.
“If the impact was a fraction stronger, the Duke would have died, but our vet immediately did surgery, removed the blade and stitched a deep wound,” — said the representative of the organization is Allan Perrins (Allan Perrins). According to him, the dog “miraculously” came to himself during the night after surgery. The next day came for her master and the scene of their emotional reunion was caught on video.
“I have no doubt that the man wanted to kill my dog. Then hanging around a different mob and gangsters. I’ll never know if he wanted to Rob me or maim. But I know for sure that the Duke would not have allowed to hurt me” — said the owner of the dog.
According to Perrins, the organization carried out the operation free of charge, given the lack of money from wensel.
