Latvia urges Europe to unite to confront Russia

The President of Latvia Raimonds vējonis urged European States to unite in order to restrain Russian aggression. He stated this in an interview with German magazine Spiegel.

“We need a credible deterrent to Russia has not once invaded another European country as invaded Georgia. Europe must be United”, — said Vejonis.

The President stressed that one should not underestimate the influence of Moscow in the Latvian population, because many Russians live in Latvia recently and watch Russian television. In his opinion, such individuals are more susceptible to the influence of Russia. For example, they participate in demonstrations against the consolidation of the Latvian language in education.

Vejonis said that he and his country gives confidence NATO military base, located in Latvia. He is convinced that the EU and NATO will support Latvians in case of conflict. On the other hand, the President noted the common economic interests that bind Moscow and Riga.

Vejonis added that the Kremlin will try to consolidate Pro-Russian forces in the European Parliament and to split Europe. He urged EU countries to prepare carefully for the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held in may.
