Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev has promised to deal with the construction project on lake Baikal plant to export water to China, checking for compliance with environmental standards, reports “Interfax”.
According to him, the issue has become lately very sharp, but one must consider all aspects of the project. “I’m not ready to say that it is bad or good,” — said Medvedev, promising to give “order to check for compliance with the highest environmental standards.”
The Prime Minister also stressed that it is impossible to go back to the past and need to make every effort to ensure that Baikal was the cleanest lake on the planet.
The construction of a plant to export water to China is “Akvasib” since January. It is planned that he will earn by 2021.
A petition against this project scored about 900 thousand signatures. The document’s authors argue that the plant could cause irreparable harm to lake Baikal.
