NATO returns to the system of the transatlantic lift of troops in Europe that existed during the cold war. This was announced by the Deputy Secretary of the Russian security Council Mikhail Popov in an interview to “Krasnaya Zvezda”.

In the framework of strengthening the troops of the United States and Canada being transferred to Europe to reinforce coalition military forces on the border with Russia, he said. According to Popov, the military-political bloc has increased the number of military forces priority use of the unit in 1,6 times-to 40 thousand people.

In addition, the leadership of the Alliance decided to form the third headquarters of the multinational division “North” on the basis of the control of the Danish mechanized infantry division. It is noted that NATO is already the headquarters of the “North-East” in Poland and “South-East” in Romania.

Deputy Secretary of the security Council drew attention to “a significant increase in the intensity of operational and combat training of NATO forces close to Russian borders”. Also doubled the number of exercises that have a pronounced anti-Russian orientation, he said.

Popov recalled that when the Alliance was created, it consisted of 15 member States, but in 20 years its membership has increased almost two times, mainly due to the admission of the countries of the former members of the Warsaw Pact and former Soviet republics. “In other words, since 1990-ies, NATO is expanding due East, towards Russia”, — he concluded, adding that the result was a trend of transformation of military dangers in military threats.
