The United States started the production of components for testing of non-nuclear land-based missiles that were prohibited by the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty). About TASS said the official representative of the Ministry of defense Lieutenant Colonel Michelle Baldanza.
He stressed that Washington had not yet taken “irreversible steps” at this stage, therefore, in the case of Russia respecting the rules of the Treaty, the US can reverse its decision on withdrawal.
“Only Russia will be responsible for scrapping the Treaty, if she’s not back to its full and verifiable compliance, destroyed by 2 August, i.e. after a period of six months, your system, in breach of the agreement”, — said Baldanza.
On 14 March it became known that the Pentagon is planning to test missiles prohibited by the INF Treaty. We are talking about cruise missile with a range of about one thousand kilometers, and ballistic missiles with a range three to four thousand kilometers. It is noted that nuclear weapons won’t be in them. Tests of the first missiles will be held in August and the second in November.
March 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on suspension of the implementation of the INF Treaty. This was mirrored Russia’s response to similar actions of Washington. His American counterpart, Donald trump announced plans to withdraw from the Treaty in October 2018, on charges of violation of the Moscow document.
The INF Treaty, concluded in 1987 between the USSR and the USA, allows parties to be armed with ballistic missiles, land-based and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5.5 thousand kilometers. Moscow and Washington have regularly accused each other of violating its terms.
