Serbia is focused on EU membership, wants almost half of the citizens of the country. This was stated by the Ambassador of Serbia in Russia slavenko Terzic, according to RIA Novosti.
EU membership will ensure the country’s economic development, said the diplomat. In addition, he added, Serbia — “a European country and wants to develop normal relations with neighbors.”
At the same time, he noted that Belgrade does not want to become a member of any military Alliance, and wants to remain neutral. “The European Union is one thing, NATO is a different thing. We had a survey, 80 percent of the population of Serbia does not want to join NATO, NATO want about eight-nine percent,” — said Terzic.
In 2018, the European Commission stated that they wanted to accelerate the process of accession of Serbia into the EU. It was noted that Serbia and Montenegro can join the unit in 2025. Belgrade will have to sign a “legally binding agreement on the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo”.
From 24 March to 9 June 1999, Serbia and Montenegro, then part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), was bombed by the North Atlantic Alliance. The official reason for the operation “allied force” was called ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.
