The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in day of elections of the head of state reminded about the termination of the Agreement on friendship, cooperation and partnership with Russia. About this Poroshenko wrote on his page in Facebook.

“As promised, on April 1, after completion of all formal procedures, terminates the so-called basic agreement with Moscow, which was unable to discard its Imperial ambitions,” — said Poroshenko.

According to him, the Russian authorities had “dashed” the purpose of the contract “suffering that has rushed into life of the Ukrainian families.” “Today, the treacherous, the Kremlin has coveted most dear: our will, our independence, our future”, — wrote Poroshenko.

The politician said that Ukraine is “step by step” will continue to go its own way, “returning home to Europe” and “break the shackles of Moscow”.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in December of 2018 voted for the bill on the termination of the contract.

The Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Russia and Ukraine was signed in 1997 and entered into force in 1999. In 2008, due to the fact that the parties had not expressed the desire to withdraw from the agreement, the document was automatically extended for another 10 years.
