The Pentagon is developing military options to counter the influence of Russia, Cuba and China in Venezuela without direct confrontation. It is reported April 15, CNN with reference to the representative of the Department familiar with the situation.
Advisor to the President for national security John Bolton asked the acting head of the Pentagon Patrick Shanahan to develop new ways of action in connection with the Venezuelan crisis. According to the source, we are working on the joint chiefs of staff, in conjunction with the Southern command, which oversees any military intervention in the southern hemisphere.
However, sources tell CNN that Washington has no desire to use military force to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Instead, the U.S. government offered to hold naval exercises near United States of Venezuela and to promote the active military cooperation with its neighbors.
U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo also said April 15 that “all options are considered” actions against Venezuela. Prior to that, he called Russia’s calls on non-interference in the Affairs of Caracas hypocritical.
The situation in Venezuela escalated on 23 January, when, after mass protest demonstrations, the opposition leader Juan Guido proclaimed himself provisional President. USA, most EU members and the countries of Latin America recognized him as the legitimate head of the Republic. Russia and several other States, in turn, made with the support of the incumbent President Maduro.
