Germany acting really weird towards NATO. This was told to the edition of Focus, the former chief strategist of the Pentagon, now the Director of defense programs at the Center for a new American security Elbridge Colby.
According to him, now for NATO main threat — Russia. And strong militarily, “Germany would be much safer to restrain the Russians,” he said.
Colby noted that the behavior of Berlin “almost cynical,” since he had most to gain from NATO, and now refuses to increase spending in the framework of the Alliance. He believes that Germany as the richest European country should spend more on defense themselves and allies on the block.
At the same time, the expert points out that now the German armed forces are only “a pale shadow of what it was at the end of the cold war.” However, if the country has at least done a small part to the fact that in 1988, many of the problems NATO would have been able to solve, he says.
Earlier in April, the German Deputy Bijan Djir-Sarai said that is too small, the defense spending of the country make Germany a threat to NATO. Before the United States urged Berlin to increase military spending and to fulfill obligations to the North Atlantic Alliance.
