The President-elect of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the May 9 holiday thanksgiving and told how he visited the grave of his grandfather Seeds Zelensky in his native city of Kryvyi Rih. Post about this he wrote in Facebook.
“It is a pity that we so seldom remember our veterans, their grandfathers and grandmothers. We must be grateful for every day. Today — may 9th. This is our thanksgiving Day” — written by Zelensky.
The President-elect said that his grandfather Semyon Ivanovich Zelensky went through the war and remained in his memory as “one of those heroes who defended Ukraine from the Nazis”.
Zelensky previously published in his Facebook photo, where he was pictured with two participants of the Second world war, shake hands. According to the politician, this Praskovya Zelenchuk-Patak, which in 13 years has been connected in the UPA (armed formation of the OUN under the command of Stepan Bandera) and the captain of the first rank of naval infantry of the Soviet Navy Ivan zaluzhnyy.
On March 26, Ukraine entered into force the law, to equate the rights of veterans of the great Patriotic war, who fought on the side of the red Army, and nationalists from the organization of Ukrainian nationalists — Ukrainian insurgent army (OUN-UPA, the movement is banned in Russia). Now both veterans have the status of fighters for independence and equal benefits.
Thursday, may 9, it became known that near Krivoy Rog radicals in balaclavas threw stones at the bus with people going to the celebration of Victory Day.
