The state Duma in the first reading adopted a draft law to toughen penalties for drunk drivers whose fault people were killed in the accident, reports RIA Novosti.
The bill was introduced in the lower house of Parliament in April and supported by all political factions, ministries and departments. It proposed to amend article 264 of the criminal code (“Violation of traffic rules and operation of vehicles”) and to increase the maximum term of imprisonment in case of causing grievous bodily harm to seven years (now four years), when the death of a person under twelve (now seven) in the event of the death of two and more persons — till 15 years of imprisonment (now up to nine). The document also suggests tougher penalties for drunken accidents on railway, air, Maritime and inland water transport and subway
In late April, it was reported that the interior Ministry is preparing to toughen the responsibility for violation of traffic regulations to reduce fatalities. The details of the office does not.
