Currently, officials are trying to determine the source of contamination and to establish its scope. It is reported that they may see a longer closure of the school. “We are not going to risk somebody’s baby,” said the Director of the local school district.
Some local residents have suggested that the source of infection may be a neighbouring Portsmouth gaseous diffusion plant two miles (3.2 kilometres) from the school. Earlier this facility is producing enriched uranium, including weapons-grade uranium for the atomic energy programme of the United States. Uranium enrichment at the site ended in 2001.
