The head of “Naftogaz of Ukraine” Andrey KOBOLEV admitted the possibility of extension of cooperation with Russian “Gazprom” after 2019, when it will expire the current contract for the transit of gas through territory of Ukraine, transfers “Interfax”.
“[Russian] side officially announced that he will speak only after the new President takes office and held a conversation between Mr. Zelenski and Mr. Putin. We expect this event. I think, perhaps, these talks will resume in June,” — said KOBOLEV.
According to him, there are several factors that can influence the course of negotiations. Among them, the position of Germany, supporting the launch of the gas pipeline from Russia to Europe, “Nord stream-2” (it will be an alternative to transit through Ukraine), the US sanctions against Moscow and the ability to “Naftogaz” to recover the $ 12 billion — a claim for this amount the company filed earlier in the year in the Stockholm arbitration. It justified losses to the Ukrainian gas transportation system in the event of launch of “Nord stream-2”.
Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that he doubted the possibility of the European Commission to block the construction of “Nord stream-2”. According to her, to prevent the implementation of the project will not even the recently adopted EU Directive. Berlin also needs Russian gas on the background of the refusal from the use of coal.
