Chinese researchers, representatives of primary samples of mantle from the back side of the moon collected by the lunar Rover “WiTu-2” in the framework of the mission Chang’e 4. This writes the journal Nature.
Scientists discovered in the samples, the pyroxenes and olivines high — density minerals with low calcium and high iron content. In their opinion, these rocks were originally part of the upper mantle, however, was thrown to the surface because of falling of meteorites. At the same time, the crust of the moon is composed of lighter minerals from the class of plagioclases.
It is noted that for 60 years of research, details were examined, only the bark of a celestial body. It is assumed that the mantle must contain more heavy elements such as iron and manganese, however, the composition forming the rocks of the mantle are unknown.

Earlier in the same month, Chinese machine with a 140-kilogram lunar Rover mission, Chang’e 4 made a soft landing in the moon pool South pole — Aitken. Prior to that, no country in the world has landed on the side of the moon. It is expected that the unit will collect data on the geological structure of the moon and the composition of its soil, and will also hold a series of low-frequency radio astronomy observations.
