Russian scientists began the development of the country’s first drifting ice station to operate in the Arctic. The invention allows to control the situation on the ice, to monitor climate change and to ensure the safety of navigation, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the press service of the Institute of Oceanology behalf of the Shirshov Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the Agency, are necessary for monitoring natural and anthropogenic anomalies, for the prevention of natural and man-made disasters. During the long polar night, the device will automatically measure the speed of ocean currents, salinity, temperature and ice thickness. The data obtained will be sent for further analysis on the satellite communication channel.

Thanks to the advent of station navigation on the Northern sea route will be safer. In addition, according to representatives of the Institute, the development will help to conserve natural biodiversity in the Arctic.
It is noted that while in the Russian drifting ice stations there. They are used by the European Union, Japan, Canada and the United States. There are more than hundred such stations.
