Russian scientists began the development of the country’s first drifting ice station to operate in the Arctic. The invention allows to control the situation on the ice, to monitor climate change and to ensure the safety of navigation, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the press service of the Institute of Oceanology behalf of the Shirshov Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to the Agency, are necessary for monitoring natural and anthropogenic anomalies, for the prevention of natural and man-made disasters. During the long polar night, the device will automatically measure the speed of ocean currents, salinity, temperature and ice thickness. The data obtained will be sent for further analysis on the satellite communication channel.

According to the new the may decrees of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, by 2024 it is planned to increase the volume of traffic on the Northern sea route to 80 million tons. Thanks to the advent of station navigation on the Northern sea route will be safer. In addition, according to representatives of the Institute, the development will help to conserve natural biodiversity in the Arctic.
